(877) 880-4090Known as the “Rodeo Capital of Texas,” the Dallas suburb of Mesquite is the 22nd largest city in the United States based on recent census figures. Larger populations also mean higher motor vehicle accident rates; in August 2022, law enforcement reported more than 540 car crashes in the Dallas metro area. The majority were non-injury accidents due to speeding, improper turns, lane changes and distractions. However, local police in Mesquite reported five injury accidents, all of which took place within a 30-hour period. At the end of August, local news sources reported three more serious injury accidents, one of which involved five high school students.
The fact is that the Dallas area sees a very high rate of road accidents. Most are attributable to simple carelessness. In and around Mesquite, most of the aforementioned accidents took place on freeways, including interchanges and off-ramps.
Here is a brief list of locations in and around Mesquite that saw multiple accidents during 2022, along with descriptions of the events.
This location saw three collisions that month, all within 48 hours.
On August 19th, a single car accident involving a 2012 Chevrolet happened at 4:09 in the afternoon. The driver, a 39-year-old male, was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol at the time. Amazingly, he sustained no injuries.
On August 21st, a single car rollover occurred at 8:16 PM. The vehicle, listed in the police report as a 2006 GMC, was driven by a 21-year-old female, carrying two males and a young girl in a rear-facing child safety seat. It was raining that night. Amazingly, all four occupants were uninjured.
The following morning, there was a crash involving three vehicles, occurring at 7:53 AM. According to the police report, it was still raining that morning. The driver determined to be responsible for the incident was distracted. Fortunately, nobody was injured, although there was significant property damage.
The first of two August accidents at in this area occurred on the morning of the 22nd at 5:07. Rain was reported. The vehicles involved were a 2019 Chevrolet, driven by a 37-year-old female, and a 2007 Ford with a 25-year-old male at the wheel. The woman was determined to be at fault due to distraction. There were no injuries
On the 29th at 6:09 PM, there was a two-car accident involving a 2020 Jeep and a 2008 Ford. The driver of the Jeep, a 45-year-old male, was determined to be at fault due to a wrong side approach to the intersection. The drivers and their passengers escaped the incident without injury.
Running east to west, East Kearney street crosses two major north-south arterial routes at North Bryan-Belt Line Road and North Galloway Avenue. In August of 2022, there were three collisions in this area.
The first occurred on August 19th at 9:30 AM at the intersection of Bryan-Belt Line Road involving a Ford (model year unidentified) and a 1999 Dodge. The driver of the Ford was traveling at an unsafe speed, causing the accident. No injuries were reported.
At 8:00 AM on August 22nd, there was a single-car crash at North Galloway involving a 2013 BMW. With the rain that morning, the accident was attributed to poor visibility.
A second accident occurred on the 24th at 11:21 AM. The driver of a black 2019 Toyota ran the red light, running into a white 2016 Toyota, injuring the driver.
There were two accidents in August 2022, both occurring on the LBJ Freeway just south of the Cartwright-Bruton Road Overpass.
On the rainy night of the 22nd at 11:44, the driver of a 2017 Honda was traveling too fast for conditions, resulting in a one-car crash. The 33-year-old woman escaped injury, thanks to the deployment of the vehicle’s airbag.
On August 28th, there was a collision between a 2019 Jeep and a second unidentified vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was distracted when they struck the Jeep, driven by a 58-year-old woman and carrying a six-year-old passenger. The woman suffered minor injuries.
Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol was involved in a few of the over 540 road accidents in the area during the time period in question. However, in the overwhelming majority of cases, these collisions were due to three factors:
The last one is significant because most motorists do not realize that distractions such as cell phone use, checking makeup or hair in the rear-view mirror, or simply adjusting the stereo can impair their driving ability just as drugs or alcohol can. Cell phone use while driving is a major contributor to driver distraction. According to a 2015 study published in the journal Traffic Injury Protection, cell phone use while driving can increase the chances of a road accident by 17 percent.
Your best protection from becoming a traffic accident victim is to avoid multitasking while behind the wheel, whether it’s trying to use a cell phone, conversing with a passenger, eating while driving or drinking a beverage.
